FlowSet: A New Chapter
for BPM

Operations

We are pleased to share that OpenBPM is now FlowSet. This change reflects how our vision has evolved and clarifies the true value we are delivering to process automation teams.

Why the Change?

When we launched the project, our initial goal was to create an open-source BPM engine as a successor to Camunda 7, complemented by high-productivity tools for developers. Over time, we recognized that other professional teams — such as Operaton — already provide strong open-source Camunda alternatives. Rather than duplicate that work, we decided to collaborate with the Operaton project and focus on where BPM teams face the greatest challenges: BPM operations.

The previous name, OpenBPM, no longer reflected this direction. It also caused confusion by suggesting the entire toolchain would be open source. In practice, some of our most valuable components — such as the Studio plug-in for IntelliJ IDEA and Workspace for analysts — will be delivered under a freemium, but commercial model. We believe transparency in naming is essential to align with our long-term vision and the expectations of the engineering community.

Our Focus: BPM-Ops

Through numerous interviews with BPM development teams, one issue speaks loudly: disconnected operations across the toolchain. Modeling, prototyping, programming, testing, and deployment often happen in silos. Unlike software engineering, BPM still lacks a DevOps-style approach that ensures speed, consistency, and collaboration. This gap slows down digital transformation, increases errors, and adds unnecessary complexity for process teams.

FlowSet addresses this challenge directly. Our mission is to provide an integrated BPM-Ops toolchain that helps teams:

  • Deliver new processes faster
  • Implement changes with fewer errors
  • Reduce the costs of process automation with open-source tech
  • Improve collaboration across developers, analysts, and operations

Why FlowSet?

The new name clearly reflects our purpose:

  • Flow represents workflows and the end-to-end process lifecycle.

  • Set represents both the complete toolbox and the ability to set up processes effectively.

Together, FlowSet means providing the right set of tools to help your BPM initiatives run smoothly, predictably, and under full control.
